Office of Institutional Effectiveness

The Office of Institutional Effectiveness serves as a resource for accountability and informed decision making to fulfill and advance the University's mission:

Webster University nurtures the skills, knowledge and personal growth of our students, cultivating learners who are engaged citizens, ready to create meaningful change in their communities and the world.

Four Functional Areas

The work of the Office of Institutional Effectiveness centers on four functional areas.

  • Institutional Accreditation: OIE conducts and guides inquiry, analysis and reporting to ensure the University's continued accreditation as a "worldwide institution."
  • Institutional Research: OIE conducts and guides inquiry, analysis, and reporting of the quality of "learning experiences" to ensure that they "transform students for global citizenship and individual excellence."
  • Data Reporting: OIE reports data internally and externally to use for accountability and informed decision making.
  • Data Management: OIE gathers, structures, and manages data, ensuring data integrity, for use in inquiry, analysis and reporting.

Design Structure

We ask the following questions when designing work for each of our functional areas.

  1. What do we want to know?
Our first step is determining the specific mission-centric questions that we need to address in planning and designing our inquiry.
  2. Why do we want to know?
Ultimately, the results of our inquiry, analysis, and reporting are to inform decision making to fulfill and advance Webster's mission. For example, stakeholders may use the results for:
    • accountability and compliance (e.g., accreditation),
    • monitoring and/or strengthening our practices and policies to ensure high quality learning experiences, and
    • modifying or developing new learning experiences to enhance our outcomes of global citizenship and individual excellence.
  3. How will we use the results?
Before beginning our work, we need to determine how the stakeholders will use the results in order to inform our methodology and reporting.
  4. How will we find out?
We use quantitative and qualitative methods for data gathering and analysis. We may use existing student data or gather new data through methods such as surveys and focus groups.
  5. What did we find out?
Our reporting addresses the questions that we posed for our work and informs the stakeholders of our findings according to their needs.
